10 Tips to Prevent Heat Stroke
- Avoid direct sun exposure without protection between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. during the summer.
- Drink at least 2–2.5 liters (about 12–14 glasses) of water daily.
- Maintain a balanced salt intake.
- Do not use diuretics unnecessarily.
- Stay physically active.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses.
- Choose loose, light-colored, cotton clothing.
- Eat light meals rich in fruits and vegetables.
- If exercising, do it before 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. Drink 2–4 glasses of water for every hour of exercise.
- If you go out in the sun during peak hours, use sunscreen with at least SPF 15.
5 Things to Do in Case of Heat Stroke
- Move the affected person away from the hot environment.
- Remove their clothing and wrap them in wet towels.
- If conscious, give plenty of water and mineral water to drink.
- If unconscious, call emergency services (112) immediately.
- If the person is unconscious, lay them on their side and monitor their breathing. Stay with them until medical help arrives.
5 Things You Should Never Do in Case of Heat Stroke
- Do not immerse the person in ice-cold water, which may cause cold shock.
- Do not give fluids by mouth to someone who is unconscious.
- Do not force the person to stand up or walk.
- Do not give caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
Do not attempt to treat the person while still exposed to the sun.
